Virtues of the Virtual Autopsy [Slide Show]

Medical imaging offers new ways to examine the deceased

Hospitals are not performing as many autopsies as they used to. Many health institutions are wary of the procedures, which often reveal doctors' fatal mistakes. In most cases Medicare and private insurance do not reimburse autopsies, which means families have to pick up the tab. Compounding these issues are religious objections to opening a body after death.

Throughout medical history, however, autopsies have taught doctors and pathologists a great deal about how to improve their techniques. So some pathologists have explored whether medical imaging can make "virtual autopsies" a viable alternative to the traditional variety. Doctors can use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) to generate detailed images of a body's internal structures without ever laying fingers on a scalpel. The conclusions so far are mixed: virtual autopsies are unlikely to ever fully replace traditional ones, but they do offer range of unique advantages. Virtual autopsies, for example, clearly reveal the contours of embedded objects like bullets and shrapnel, leave delicate tissues undisturbed?obviating the risk of destroying evidence for the cause of death?and circumvent religious objections.

In the accompanying slide show, you can view a selection of stunning postmortem images that Anders Persson and his colleagues produced with CT, MRI and ultrasound at the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) in Sweden. The images depict the human skeleton, digestive tract, circulatory system and brain as well as the front end of a wild boar.

Google's big October 29th product launches apparently outed ...

A few days ago, Google sent out invitations?to a press event to be held on October 29th in New York City. We noted that this event was happening on the same day as Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 press events in San Francisco and other parts of the world.

Now TheNextWeb.com reports it has information on all of the new product reveals that Google will announce at this October 29th media junket, and quite frankly it sounds pretty impressive, if all of this is true. The story says the information comes from an internal video shown to Google employees.

It's not a surprise to learn that Google is said to be revealing a 32 GB version of its previously released Nexus 7 tablet, made by Asus, at this event. The tablet will be available in both WiFi only and a WiFi/3G version, according to the story. It adds that Google will also reveal a 10 inch tablet, made by Samsung, that has the code name "Manta" but might be called the Nexus 10 when it is actually released.

The Manta will reportedly have a screen resolution of 2560x1600 and 300 PPI, compared to the current iPad which has "just" 264 PPI. The story also reports that Google will reveal the LG Nexus 4 smartphone at the event, with a 4.7 inch 1280x768 display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm?Snapdragon processor, 2 GB of RAM and more.

Both the Manta tablet and the LG Nexus 4 will reportedly be running on Android 4.2, which among other new features will allow users to access Google Play downloaded content from a widget and a way for one tablet to be shared by several people who can then access their own emails and apps.

San Diego media baron trumpets conservative causes

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The new media barons of America's eighth-largest city are upfront about wanting to use their newspaper to promote their agenda of downtown development and politically conservative causes ? and they are making their points in a brash, bare-knuckle style.

Douglas Manchester and his partner John Lynch gave their 143-year-old newspaper a new slogan ? "The World's Greatest Country & America's Finest City" ? ran a front-page editorial that declared their plan to reshape the city's downtown waterfront their highest priority, and forecast doom if President Barack Obama wins re-election.

Manchester, who became wealthy building hotels during the dawn of San Diego's downtown renaissance and insists on being called "Papa Doug," bought The San Diego Union-Tribune last year and its most serious competitor, the North County Times, this month. As he and Lynch eye expansion to Los Angeles and other major cities, they are frank about seeking to use their new platforms to advance their agenda ? and they think they can make a profit while they're at it.

Lynch calls the editorial viewpoint pro-family, pro-military and pro-America.

"We think our country is on the edge of real, real danger, and you have to stand up, and that was a huge part of why we bought this," said Lynch, vice chairman and chief executive officer of U-T San Diego, the newspaper's new name.

The editorial page named Obama the worst U.S. president and predicted a second term will result in "Arab terror states" attacking Israel, "death panels" rationing health care, income tax rates between 60 and 70 percent for many Californians and an attempt to get taxpayers to pay for late-term abortions. It warned of an effort to erase "In God We Trust" from U.S. currency.

Manchester, 70, is likened to a smaller market version of Rupert Murdoch and earlier moguls like William Randolph Hearst and Robert McCormick who used newspapers to wield influence. The unusually strong editorial tone stands out in an era when many newspapers are owned by corporations.

"Hard to believe UT could go further to the right and for the developers but now it is owned by the developers!" Ron Belanger, a 70-year-old retired Navy aviator, wrote on a Facebook page for critics of the new owners called "Bring the L.A. Times back to San Diego."

"It's a strong voice for a minority viewpoint in the media," countered Josef Horowitz, a 67-year-old retired college administrator who renewed his subscription in March, having canceled it under previous owners because he felt the editorials were mealy-mouthed and too liberal.

Lynch said Editor Jeff Light has complete control of news coverage and that neither he nor Manchester, as chairman and publisher, meddle.

"Aside from the activist stance of the owners, I am someone who is scrupulously concerned with fairness," Light said.

Lynch, a former radio station owner with a linebacker's build at age 65, speaks bluntly. He recently wrote Scott Peters, a Port of San Diego commissioner and Democratic nominee for Congress, demanding to know his position on a shipping contract to unload bananas that could complicate the publisher's plans for the downtown waterfront redevelopment. He wanted an exit clause.

"Otherwise this will become a major issue in the campaigns and the UT will be forced to lead a campaign to disband the PORT," he wrote.

The email correspondence, dated in early August and released after a public records request by KPBS/I-Newsource, came as Peters wages a bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray, a Republican endorsed by the newspaper.

In May, Lynch lashed out when the city warned of a fine for hanging a promotional banner outside its offices. He agreed to take it down while seeking approval for a large video screen atop the five-story building.

"If it weren't for the digital sign pending approval, I would instruct our folks to run a piece on how this is so reflective of this city being anti-business," Lynch wrote a city councilman's aide, according to an email published by the San Diego Reader.

Lynch said his missive about the sign was intended as a joke and questions why other news organizations haven't taken a harder look at the port.

Dean Nelson, director of Point Loma Nazarene University's journalism program, said he hasn't seen blatant examples of editorial views seeping into news coverage and is skeptical how much newspaper editorials shape public policy. The question that will be watched most closely in the beleaguered U.S. newspaper industry, he said, is whether the business succeeds.

Tim McGuire, a journalism professor at Arizona State University, said San Diego is at the forefront of what he predicts will be a major trend of wealthy people buying newspapers to feed their egos and push for their agendas.

"People are going to buy and treat newspapers like sports teams," he said. "It's a toy, it's fun to have, and it gives you great power."

Manchester embraced the "Papa Doug" moniker after a Little League coach used it to distinguish him from a son, also named Doug. "Papa Doug" sold interests in two giant downtown hotels but still has major holdings in San Diego and is pursuing prospects, including a $1.3 billion hotel and office complex on the downtown waterfront.

Lynch said Manchester was unavailable for an interview. The pair are old friends and allies since they led a failed campaign to move San Diego's airport out of downtown in the 1990s.

Manchester lives lavishly, spending $550,000 on his 65th birthday bash, Elizabeth Manchester said in court filings that ended their 43-year marriage in 2010. She claimed he had $57 million in the bank.

His $125,000 donation to support a 2008 ballot initiative to ban gay marriage in California drew protests ? a decision Lynch says his partner regrets.

"If you're a Catholic, marriage is between a man and a woman," Lynch said. "He had no idea there would be these kind of ramifications."

Manchester invested in San Diego-area resident Dinesh D'Souza's hit documentary, "2016: Obama's America," which portrays a gloomy future if the president is re-elected, according to Lynch.

Manchester bought the U-T from private equity firm Platinum Equity LLC for $110 million and picked up the North County Times from Lee Enterprises Inc. for $12 million. Last week, the Times' print edition was folded into the U-T.

The U-T has spent $5 million on a television venture with a studio in the middle of the newsroom and 12 hours of daily cable programming that highlights Lynch's radio background. The Sunday edition features more in-depth reports and military coverage.

Lynch said the privately held U-T is "significantly profitable" but declined to be specific about revenue or earnings. One test comes when the Audit Bureau of Circulations releases semiannual paid circulation figures Oct. 30.

Amid a brutal decline in the newspaper business, Manchester and Lynch hope to extend their San Diego empire to other major U.S. cities, eyeing adjacent markets like Los Angeles.

"We're trying to do what we can to change the direction of this country," Lynch said.

Huge car bomb blast in Beirut kills at least eight

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A huge car bomb exploded in central Beirut during rush hour on Friday, killing eight people, wounding about 80 and raising fears of renewed sectarian violence in a country still scarred from a long civil war.

The explosion did not appear to target any political figure in Lebanon's divided community but it occurred at a time of heightened tension between Lebanese factions on opposite sides of the conflict in neighboring Syria.

It ripped through the street where the office of the anti-Damascus Christian Phalange Party is located near Sassine Square in Ashrafiyeh, a mostly Christian area.

Phalange leader Sami al-Gemayel, a staunch opponent of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and a member of parliament, condemned the attack.

"Let the state protect the citizens. We will not accept any procrastination in this matter, we cannot continue like that. We have been warning for a year. Enough," said Gemayel, whose brother was assassinated in November 2006.

The war in Syria, which has killed 30,000 people in the past 19 months, has pitted mostly Sunni insurgents against Assad, who is from the Alawite sect linked to Shi'ite Islam.

Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those supporting Assad and those backing the rebels trying to overthrow him.

The blast occurred during rush hour, when many parents were picking up children from school, and sent black smoke billowing into the sky.

Eight people were killed and at least 78 were wounded, the state news agency said, quoting civil defense officials.

Several cars were destroyed and the front of a multi-storey building was badly damaged, with tangled wires and metal railings crashing to the ground.

In the aftermath, residents ran about in panic looking for relatives while others helped carry the wounded to ambulances. Security forces blanketed the area.

In scenes reminiscent of the dark days of Lebanon's civil war, ambulances ferried the wounded to several hospitals, where doctors, nurses and students waited for casualties at the doors. At one hospital, an elderly woman sat in the emergency room with blood staining her blouse.

The hospitals put out an appeal for blood donations.

An employee of a bank on the street pointed to the blown-out windows of his building.

"Some people were wounded from my bank. I think it was a car bomb. The whole car jumped five floors into the air," he said.

Michael Fish, 25, a British musician visiting Beirut, said he was in his hotel a street away when the explosion happened.

"At first I thought it was an earthquake. It shook the whole hotel for a second. I ran down and started filming on my iPhone."

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said in a statement the government was trying to find out who carried out the attack and said the perpetrators would be punished.

The prospect that Syria's war might spread to Lebanon has worried many people here, and fighting broke out in February between supporters and opponents of Assad in the northern city of Tripoli.

Syria has also played a major role in Lebanese politics, siding with different factions during the 1975-1990 civil war. It deployed troops in Beirut and parts of the country during the war and stayed until 2005.

In Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoabie told reporters: "We condemn this terrorist explosion and all these explosions wherever they happen. Nothing justifies them."

Tension between Sunnis, Shi'ites and Christians in Lebanon has continued after the civil war but has increased since the Syria conflict erupted.

Sunni-Shi'te rivalry hit a peak when former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, a Sunni, was killed in 2005. Hariri supporters accused Syria and then Hezbollah of killing him - a charge they both deny. An international tribunal accused several Hezbollah members of involvement in the murder.

Hezbollah's political opponents, who have for months accused it of aiding Assad's forces, have warned that its involvement in Syria could reignite the sectarian tension of the civil war.

The last bombing in Beirut was in 2008 when three people were killed in an explosion which damaged a U.S. diplomatic car.

BP, Rosneft set for $25 billion-plus TNK-BP deal

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Rosneft and BP are preparing to announce a deal worth over $25 billion that could give the British oil company a stake of between 16 and 20 percent in the state-controlled Russian energy firm, sources familiar with the situation said.

The agreement, which has yet to be finalized but which could be made public on Monday or Tuesday, folds BP's half of TNK-BP , Russia's third-largest oil company, into Rosneft, in exchange for cash and Rosneft stock.

It allows BP to end a stormy relationship with its partners in the venture, AAR, and to pursue closer ties to a Russian government that exerts a much tighter hold on the oil industry than in it did in the 1990s when BP first invested there.

TNK-BP is highly profitable and provides a quarter of BP's total production, but its fields are mature, and the Soviet-born business tycoons who own the other half through AAR were in the way of BP's search for growth in oil-rich Russia through closer ties with Rosneft and its powerful boss.

Should the deal be finalized and survive a months-long Russian government approval process, BP's overall exposure to Russian barrels would be lower, but the holding could secure it seats on the Rosneft board and closer ties than any of its rivals to Igor Sechin, the chief executive of Rosneft, who has a significant say in energy policy.

Rosneft is already the top producing company in Russia. If, as looks likely, it buys out AAR's half of TNK-BP as well, it will control more than half the country's output and be pumping more oil and gas than Exxon Mobil , the world's top international oil company.

The deal gives Rosneft extra output and cash flow to finance exploration of Russia's vast reserves to replace ageing and depleting fields. It keeps BP's expertise in Russia and provides the "quality" private shareholder President Vladimir Putin has been looking for to show his critics he is pursuing a privatization program.

SOURCING THE STOCK

The deal can be described as having two steps for a single transaction worth in excess of $25 billion, according to one source familiar with a proposal that was put to BP by Rosneft last week.

Under step one, BP will receive a 13.4 percent holding of Rosneft's shares that belongs at present to Rosneft in the form of so-called "treasury stock", and which is nominally worth about $10 billion based on a tiny free-float of Rosneft shares that put the value of the company at around $73.5 billion. It will also receive an amount of cash.

Under step two, BP will use some of that cash to buy more Rosneft stock, as it promised to do at a recent meeting between Sechin and BP's chief executive Bob Dudley.

That would most likely to be sourced from the 75.2 percent holding of Rosneftegaz OAO , a state energy holding company which is also headed by Sechin.

The price and amount of shares was still being hammered out at the weekend, but based on a total deal value of $25 billion, a Rosneft stake of 16-20 percent would be worth about $12-$15 billion, leaving $10-$13 billion in cash, some of which shareholders hope will be returned to them.

"There's still stuff going on so it's best not to get too specific," said the source.

Those shareholders have seen little capital growth in recent years while rivals have benefitted from strong oil prices. This has been mainly due to the 2010 U.S. Gulf oil spill, but the increasingly bitter wrangles with AAR have played their part too.

PUTIN'S PROGRESS

Putin has been regaining state control of assets that passed cheaply to a small group of businessmen when privatized in a hurry in the 1990s.

Rosneft's absorption of another oil firm, Yukos, and the imprisonment of its former owner Mikhail Khodorkovsky, in the mid-2000s was the biggest step in this process until now.

That was also masterminded by Sechin, who was deputy chief of staff at the Kremlin - Putin's gatekeeper - at the time.

Sechin was in London last week to help push through the deal with BP, whose CEO Dudley is himself a veteran of BP's Russian activities.

If Sechin also buys out AAR tycoons Mikhail Fridman, German Khan, Viktor Vekselberg and Len Blavatnik, his combined Rosneft-TNK-BP would produce well over 4 million barrels of oil and gas a day, although bankers said finding more than a total of 20 billion in cash could be a stretch for the group.

On the financing side, about $15 billion could be met by a loan Rosneft has been negotiating with international banks. It could get another $3 billion from Russian banks.

Sources have also said that the AAR side of the deal could involve deferred payments over a number of years, and the TNK-BP business itself could be leveraged up. It has strong cashflow and little debt, allowing the partners to rake off $4 billion a year in dividends in recent times.

Bankers told ThomsonReutersLPC a total of 10 banks have already joined the deal and the loan could be concluded in three to four weeks.

Rosneft, AAR and BP declined to comment.

Oil's Big Fail Is Distracting You From the Real ... - Yahoo! Finance

We've all seen the pictures and surely know how time consuming and hard it is to clean up after an oil spill. And if you ask JC Parets, the founder of Eagle Bay Capital and senior editor of AllStarCharts.com about crude oil futures right now, he'll tell you to turn your eyes elsewhere if you want t0 find a real hot commodity right now.

"Oil itself is all over the place. The chart is a mess," Parets says in the attached video, in which he describes the recent slump from $100 as a dramatic failure. "The major trend we need to follow isn't 0il, it's oil versus natural gas."

When natural gas dipped below $2.00 in April, he says it may as well have "been left for dead." Part of the reason he prefers the natural gas story is because it is still so far below its historic 10-year average relative to oil of about 10-to-1 before soaring to 54-to-1 in the spring.

"That was out of control and that ratio has been crashing ever since," he says, calling the low price of the country's most abundant energy source ''a generational low."

At the same time he says other energy sources like coal are worth a look too, particularly since the low price of natural gas has had a dramatic impact on coal demand as power plants converted their turbines to the cleaner fuel.

"If we're right on nat gas and continue to see higher prices, I think we should continue to see higher prices for coal as well," he predicts, adding that investors should stay away from crude since there are better places to be.

How to notice Advertisers for Your Website - Make Money With Fun

Direct advertising sales is arguably the simplest methodology to legalize an internet site. Finding advertisers for your website and really closing the deals, however, isn't as simple. Over the past half-dozen months I had quite ten status firms sponsoring Daily web log Tips, and thru out this text i'll share what I actually have learned on the approach.
howtifindadvertisers.gif

The Pros

??? * a lot of money: the primary advantage of merchandising your own ads is that the indisputable fact that you may cut the middlemen out, increasing your revenue potential. Suppose you sell text link ads on your sidebar through a definite company, and therefore the text links sell for $50 monthly. Since you're victimisation the corporate network to sell the ads, they'll eat five hundredth of the value, and you may find yourself earning solely $25 monthly for every text link. If somebody is willing to pay $50 for a text link on your website, though, it means they're obtaining $50 valuable out of it. Why, then, do you have to share that with somebody else?
??? * Independence: certain, giant advertising networks have access to a wider pool of advertisers, and that they have a lot of credibleness to shut the deals. however if you've got all the necessities in situ (see the section below) and pay a while observing the proper places, i'm certain that you just are able to sell your own ads even as with efficiency because the larger networks.
??? * Flexibility: The third advantage of merchandising direct advertising is that you just can have far more management over wherever and the way the ads are displayed (i.e., you'll avoid intrusive advertising). Google Adsense is good, however unless you mix it with the content ? annoying a number of the readers ? you may get really low click-through rates.
??? * Credibility: Finally, having sponsors and direct advertisers on your web log may facilitate your credibleness. Even tiny and poorly crafted blogs will stick some Adsense units here and there. Having established firms that square measure willing to partnership along with your website, on different hand, will signal that your content has quality which the location is somewhat skilled.

The Cons

??? * Time consuming: whereas merchandising your own ads has several benefits, it's no curative. the primary downside of this substantiation possibility is that the time that it'll consume. now are spent optimizing your web site for the ads, finding potential advertisers, negotiating with them, and handling the executive matters (e.g., creating payments, following statistics, delivering reports so on).
??? * several requirements: merchandising direct adverting isn't as straightforward as creating cash from Google Adsense. As you'll see from the section below, you may have to be compelled to have a well-liked web log, knowledgeable wanting style, special software system and therefore the like.
??? * Unstable: Unless you close up deals for terribly long periods, that is unlikely, you may notice your self searching for new advertisers or optimizing your web site to draw in new ones each different month. the other is true for many advertising networks, wherever you simply have to be compelled to plug some code and that they can do the remainder of the work. (If your website or web log is simply a hobby, therefore, direct advertising may not be the simplest option)

What you would like to possess in situ

??? * a well-liked website: Before landing direct advertising deals you may have to be compelled to have an honest quantity of traffic on your website. there's no ?magical? variety here, however an honest rule of thumb would be one thousand daily distinctive guests. If you're below that mark you must target building traffic rather than searching for advertisers. different factors like Google Pagerank, RSS subscribers and Alexa rank may also facilitate. (Notice that little websites may also be able to sell direct advertising, however typically the time spent on it won't justify the results)
??? * a transparent focus: you may have the foremost common website on the web (well, not as extreme as that, however you get the point), however unless your website conjointly contains a terribly clear niche and an outlined audience, advertisers won't notice it terribly enticing. this suggests that you just ought to avoid rambling concerning a hundred totally different topics on the web site. Advertisers need to deliver a message to specific folks, and therefore the a lot of specific the higher.
??? * knowledgeable wanting design: If you're getting to legalize your web site through sponsors, you most likely ought to invest some cash into knowledgeable wanting style. Advertisers are associating their product or service along with your web site, and not too several of them would be willing to induce mixed with an unpleasant, MySpace wanting website.
??? * provide visibility to the sponsors: now is connected to the previous one. Not all templates and themes are appropriate for merchandising direct advertising. ideally you would like to possess a thought of what reasonably advertising you may sell (e.g., 468?60 banners, 125?125 banners, text links) and style your web site in step with those objectives. Advertisers need visibility, thus reserve an honest spot for them.
??? * Adserver software: so as to serve your ads, rotate banners associate degreed track statistics you may have to be compelled to install an Adserver. If you're searching for a straightforward answer you must strive WP-Ads. This WordPress plugin can serve ads for specific ad zones that you just produce. the sole downside is that it doesn't count clicks (only impressions). If you would like a a lot of subtle answer check OpenAds. you may have to be compelled to pay a while learning a way to use it, however it offers just about all the options you may ever would like.
??? * ?Advertise Here? page: it's vital to possess associate degree ?Advertise Here? page. On this page you would like to present some details concerning the web site, like audience, traffic and the other issue which may be of the interest of potential advertisers. Secondly, ensure that you just have some link thereto page on the navigation bar and if potential near the zone wherever the ads are displayed. you'll see an ideal example of such layout on Copyblogger.com.
??? * customary letter to approach advertisers: whereas some advertisers can contact you once reading your ?Advertise Here? page, the remainder of them can have to be compelled to be directly approached by you. in this case, it's an honest plan to form a typical letter to contact the advertisers. there's no ?one size fits all? answer here, however you'll follow some general guidelines:

????? 1. Introduce yourself and quickly justify what the e-mail is concerning
????? 2. justify why you made the choice to contact them and what they need to achieve
????? 3. make clear concerning your website (traffic, subscribers, topic, audience)
????? 4. make clear concerning the advertising choices (location on the location, goop variety of advertisers, monthly price)

????? That is it, at that time info the advertisers ought to be able to decide if they're interested or not. If they reply, then you may fix the small print. Bear in mind that each one the information i discussed ought to be contained in a pair of or three paragraphs. If you send associate degree essay to potential advertisers they'll simply skip it altogether.
??? * acceptive payments: you may have everything in situ, however if you're unable to money payments ? or a lot of significantly, if advertisers aren't able to pay simply ? you may find yourself losing deals. PayPal is that the most suitable choice here. Notice, however, that a private account won't serve. you may would like a minimum of a premier account to be able to settle for credit cards.

Where to search out the Advertisers

Once you've got your direct advertising program established, you may begin to receive inquiries from folks. On the start, however, you may have to be compelled to hunt advertisers down. don't get discouraged if get turned down at the start, provided you've got all the said necessities, sooner or later you may notice somebody willing to require a trial on your website.

??? * folks linking to your website or articles: If a corporation is willing to link to your articles or to feature your web site beneath its ?Links? or ?Resources? section, it's conjointly most likely willing to debate concerning advertising on your website. Keep track of these incoming links.
??? * folks going comments/e-mails: identical principle applies to folks going comments on your web log or causing you e-mails. If among them you see associate degree worker or the owner of a corporation that might have an interest on your web site, bingo! Contact him or her and acquire the speech communication going.
??? * AdWords advertisers: Through out your hunt for advertisers you may notice that almost all of the established firms aren't attentive to the advantages of on-line advertising. If a definite company is already pocket money on Google AdWords, however, it's terribly seemingly that it'd even be receptive different types of on-line advertising. deem some keywords that square measure associated with your topic and Google them. Check the sponsored links that may seem and make contact with them. (You also can check the advertisers that seem on the Adsense units of connected websites)
??? * different advertising networks: whereas Google AdWords is far and away the most important advertising network on the web, there square measure several others that might be helpful. Check the businesses that square measure pocket money on AdBrite, Text-Link-Ads, BlogAds, SponsoredReviews so on.
??? * Banner advertisers on similar sites: verify common websites on your niche and see what firms square measure advertising there. Provided you supply them a motivating deal (i.e., an inexpensive value for your size), i'm pretty certain they'll have an interest.

I actually have a bookmarker folder on my browser referred to as ?Potential Sponsors.? anytime I stumble upon a corporation or web site that might have an interest in sponsoring my web site, I bookmarker it. presently I actually have over a hundred bookmarked sites on it folder, and that i haven't approached 1/2 them nonetheless.

Make sure, therefore, that your advertising deals can deliver.
??? * The numbers: keep in mind that there square measure some pretty low-cost advertising choices out there (e.g., Google AdWords), and you may have to be compelled to be competitive. Provided you reserved an honest spot for the sponsors (sidebar or header, preferably) you'll begin charging a $0,5 CPM (cost per one thousand impressions). If your web log is generating a hundred,000 monthly page views, therefore, a banner spot on your sidebar ought to price around $50. begin low and build your approach upwards. common blogs (e.g., TechCrunch) have the next CPM, generally as high as $10, however you may would like an enormous credibleness to arrive there.
??? * Cross-check: you'll simply check if you're charging an acceptable rate by victimisation Adsense units on the places wherever you may sell direct advertising. Analyze what proportion you'd gain with Adsense, and regulate your rates consequently. Secondly, you'll conjointly check similar sites that square measure already merchandising direct ads.
??? * Be versatile relating to the terms: Flexibility is vital. 1st of all create advertising agreements on a month-to-month basis. folks don?t wish to arrange to one thing they're not utterly certain concerning. If somebody proposes you a extended deal, supply a reduction in exchange.
??? * supply take a look at periods: Unless you've got a awfully common web site, you may notice potential advertisers reluctant to pay real cash. If you're assured that the deal can produce worth for each parties, however, you'll use that on your favor. supply a free period whenever required. a number of the days the adman can flip you down once it, however different times they'll ensure the deal. Either approach you've got nothing to lose.

Court: Woman can wear headscarf at work - The Local

A German dental practice which refused to hire a young Muslim woman because she insisted on wearing a headscarf at work broke the law, it was reported on Thursday. The court ruling is the first of its kind for the country.

A young Berlin woman applied last summer for a traineeship to become a dental assistant. Despite being qualified and getting along with staff, she was told that she could not have the position unless she removed her headscarf, the Tagesspiegel newspaper said.

This was religious discrimination, the city's labour court ruled. A headscarf was not an ?arbitrary piece of clothing? but an expression of her beliefs and wearing it was part of her right to religious freedom.

Refusing to employ because of her headscarf was in breach of the Equal Treatment Act, the judge said.

The court also rejected the suggestion that headscarves could pose a hygiene risk to patients. There was no more chance of transferring bacteria with a scarf than there was via human hair, the judge said.

The Spandau-based dental surgery argued that they had a right to religious neutrality in the clinic. But the judge said that as ?it was in no way a religious institution,? this was not valid.

Other women who had appealed for the right to wear a headscarf at work have lost in the past, generally because they had taken church-related employers to court.

The woman applied for the position in the summer of 2011. When she was rejected she decided, with help from the Turkish Association of Berlin and Brandenburg, to take the practice to court.

Workplace Health and Safety is the Responsibility of Employers and ...

Health and safety in the workplace not only protects employees and minimizes risks, it also helps to retain valuable skills, increase productivity, and generally improve business outcomes.

But this doesn?t mean that workplace health and safety is the sole responsibility of business owners and managers. In fact legally, the management of health, safety and the wellbeing of those in the workplace is a responsibility that must be shared between workers and persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs).

Australia?s New Workplace Health and Safety Law

Australia?s new Work Health and Safety Act 2011 defines ?health? as both psychological and physical, and states that by working together to manage health risks and maintain wellbeing within the work environment, PCBUs and workers can ensure that everyone working remains safe and healthy.

Essentially, the law says that it is the duty of PCBUs ? ?as far as is reasonably practicable? (which is a new concept) ? to ensure their workers remain safe and healthy while they are at work. They are also required to maintain the work environment so that it doesn?t pose any type of risk to workers? health.

The new law (which replaced the old Workplace Health and Safety Act of 1995) also regulates the responsibility of workers, stating that they are expected to take ?reasonable care? for their own personal safety and health, and are obliged to comply with ?reasonable safety instructions? of their employers or managers.

Integrating Good Health and Safety Systems in the Workplace

The integration of effective and meaningful systems has been a priority in Australia for some time. In line with worldwide research, it was found that where workers have a mutual responsibility to actively support health initiatives and health and safety programs, that they are more responsive and positive about healthy behaviour and changes in lifestyle.

An important factor is that the integration of a safe, healthy approach should take place on a number of different levels and should include strategies that:

  • raise awareness about health issues and initiatives, and generally increase knowledge within the work force,
  • help workers to develop a range of skills that will encourage and support healthy behaviour at work,
  • promote activities that minimize and manage risk factors in the workplace,
  • actively establishes a work environment that promotes healthy choices and encourages healthy behaviour.

Of course it is vital to establish specific needs within each individual workplace, and to focus on building skills that will be needed within the organisation, so that both workers and management can help to create an environment where?workplace health and safety is paramount.

Europe advances towards single banking supervisor

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders took a big stride towards establishing a single banking supervisor for the euro zone, agreeing it would enter into force next year, opening the way for the bloc's rescue fund to inject capital directly into ailing banks.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the 27 leaders agreed at a Brussels summit to adopt a legal framework by the end of this year giving the European Central Bank overall responsibility for banking supervision.

"Once this is agreed, the single supervisory mechanism could probably be effectively operational in the course of 2013," he told a news conference after nearly 10 hours of talks.

French and EU officials said all 6,000 banks in the single currency area would gradually come under ECB supervision by 2014, starting with banks receiving state aid, then large cross-border institutions. Most day-to-day oversight would be delegated to national bodies.

Creating an effective banking union, for which this deal was a first step, is regarded by the International Monetary Fund and market economists as a key component in overcoming the euro zone's three-year-old debt crisis.

French President Francois Hollande said the leaders did not discuss possible financial assistance for Spain, but he laid out a series of steps that could turn a corner in the crisis.

"Tonight, I have the confirmation that the worst is behind us," he told a 3 a.m. news conference.

"We are on track to solve the problems that for too long have been paralysing the euro zone and made it vulnerable.

"If the December European summit confirms the decisions we took, if Greece finds a lasting solution, if Spain recovers funding mechanisms, then we will be done with a situation which weighed on markets and on the confidence in the euro zone."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it would take more than a couple of months before the supervisor was fully effective and direct bank recapitalisation could be considered.

However, the agreement appeared to be a defeat for German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's efforts to delay and limit the scope of European banking supervision.

Germany has been reluctant to see its politically sensitive savings and cooperative banks come under outside supervision. It rejects any joint deposit guarantee under which richer countries might have to underwrite banks in poorer states.

The deal came after the leaders of France and Germany, Europe's central powers, held a private meeting after clashing in public over greater EU control of national budgets.

The point when the ECB will effectively become the bloc's banking supervisor is important because it would open the way for the euro zone's bailout fund to inject capital directly into troubled banks, without adding to their host governments' debts.

A French government source said the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) could start recapitalising troubled banks as early as the first quarter of 2013, but a German source said it was "very unlikely" to happen so soon.

Merkel earlier demanded stronger authority for the executive European Commission to veto national budgets that breach EU rules. She said a December EU summit would take decisions on these issues of closer euro zone economic governance.

For once, the summit was not under intense pressure from financial markets, which have calmed since the ECB pledged last month to intervene decisively if needed to buy bonds of troubled euro zone states to preserve the euro.

"FISCAL CAPACITY"

The EU leaders issued a statement welcoming Greece's progress towards an agreement with its lenders and saying good progress had been made in putting the bailout back on track.

In Athens, police clashed with protesters hurling stones and petrol bombs during a general strike that brought much of the near-bankrupt country to a standstill.

Merkel also advocated the creation of a European fund to invest in specific projects in member states which she said could be fuelled by a financial transaction tax which 11 euro zone countries have said they will adopt.

Her call echoed a proposal for the 17-member euro zone to have its own budget -- known in EU jargon as a "fiscal capacity" -- on top of the 27-nation union's common budget, which mostly funds agriculture and aid to poorer regions.

Several states, including the Netherlands, Finland and Austria, were uneasy at the idea but none rejected it outright.

Since the ECB said last month it was ready to buy the bonds of struggling euro zone states in unlimited amounts, state borrowing costs have fallen sharply, easing the immediate pressure for Spain to seek a bailout.

Spain's 10-year bond yields sank to their lowest since February at an auction on Thursday, helped by Moody's decision this week to leave its credit rating at investment grade.

But rather than signalling that Madrid does not need help, Moody's verdict was predicated on Spain soon applying for a euro zone assistance programme to trigger ECB intervention.

Italy raised a bumper 18 billion euros from a four-year inflation-linked retail bond -- the most ever raised in a single debt offering in European markets -- reducing its need to issue debt before the end of this year.

On the banking union, much work remains to be done and the deeper the discussion union goes, the more complex and problematic it will get.

Countries outside the euro zone -- particularly Britain, which has Europe's biggest banking sector -- are concerned their banks could be disadvantaged if a balance is not maintained between the ECB and its oversight of euro zone banks and the powers of other authorities to oversee non-euro zone banks.

And if non-euro zone countries such as Poland join the banking union, as policymakers are hoping, it is unclear what representation they would have within the ECB, since the central bank is currently answerable only to euro zone member states.

PFT's picks: 49ers will bring 'Hawks down to Earth

Dallas Cowboys v Baltimore RavensGetty Images

Last week was one of those crazy Costanza weeks, when in hindsight it made sense to make our picks and then do the opposite.? Both MDS and yours truly were 6-8 for the week.? Six up, eight down.? Denver?s stunning comeback knocked me under .500 and allowed MDS to salvage a tie for the Week Six contest, since we disagreed on two games.? (The Redskins came through for me . . . finally.)

This week, there won?t be a tie unless there?s a tie in one of the three games on which we disagree.? Scroll down to see where we stand on the various comments.

And as to whether this week we made our picks and then did the opposite, our official comment is, ?No comment.?

For the year, I?m at 55-36, and MDS is 53-38.

Seahawks at 49ers

MDS?s take: The NFC West is far more competitive than anyone expected, and the winner of this game has to be viewed as the favorite to win the division. I like the 49ers to come in focused after Sunday?s dismal loss to the Giants and easily handle the Seahawks.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 23, Seahawks 6.

Florio?s take:? The Niners got a rude awakening from the Giants.? And so the Niners will be wide awake when the Seahawks blow in to town for a better-than-expected primetime showdown.? Home team gets the edge, especially since the home team was embarrassed on Sunday.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 20, Seahawks 10.

Titans at Bills

MDS?s take: Both of these teams are coming off their best wins of the season, but the Bills were the team whose win looked like something they can build on, because their defense finally stopped somebody. They?ll stop Matt Hasselbeck and Chris Johnson on Sunday, too.

MDS?s pick: Bills 20, Titans 13.

Florio?s take:? The rematch of the Music City Miracle game won?t be played in the Music City, and a miracle likely won?t be happening.? Last week, the Titans stole one from a diminished Steelers team, and the Bills showed resilience.? Playing at home with a share of first (and fourth) place in the division, Buffalo should be able to stay on the right track.? At least for now.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 27, Titans 17.

Cowboys at Panthers

MDS?s take: I?ve been on the Panthers? bandwagon all year, and although I should probably know better by now, I still believe Carolina is better than its record suggests.

MDS?s pick: Panthers 21, Cowboys 20.

Florio?s take:? The consistently inconsistent Cowboys played well and lost on Sunday in Baltimore.? They?re due to play poorly and win in Carolina against a Panthers team that has figured out how to consistently play poorly and lose.

Florio?s pick:? Cowboys 24, Panthers 20.

Ravens at Texans

MDS?s take: The only two teams with winning records in the AFC face off in a game that we might look back on in January as the game that decided home-field advantage in the playoffs. I think the team with home-field advantage takes this one, bouncing back from last week?s ugly loss to the Packers.

MDS?s pick: Texans 24, Ravens 14.

Florio?s take:? The Texans? pride is wounded.? The Ravens are simply wounded.? If Houston doesn?t get things back on track quickly, a tailspin could be coming.? They?ve got the rushing attack to get there ? and the Ravens don?t have the defense to stop them.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 27, Ravens 20.

Browns at Colts

MDS?s take: Andrew Luck has the brighter future, but right now I?m not sure he?s a better quarterback than Brandon Weeden, who?s playing better as a rookie than he gets credit for. As inspiring as their win over the Packers two weeks ago was, the Colts? loss to the Jets exposed a lot of holes, and I like the Browns to make it two wins in a row.

MDS?s pick: Browns 21, Colts 20.

Florio?s take:? Potent at home and sluggish on the road, Indy matches its win total from Peyton Manning?s rookie season against a Brown team that is still basking in the afterglow of that elusive first win of the season.? And Jimmy could be getting upset.

Florio?s pick:? Colts 30, Browns 24.

Cardinals at Vikings

MDS?s take: The Cardinals? defense and special teams are good enough to keep them in any game, but the Cardinals? offense is bad enough to lose any game. Jared Allen will make life miserable for John Skelton and the Vikings will win.

MDS?s pick: Vikings 17, Cardinals 7.

Florio?s take:? Former Vikings ballboy Larry Fitzgerald has never won in Minnesota.? That?s not likely to change on Sunday as he makes what likely will be his final trip to the soon-to-be-imploded Metrodome.

Florio?s pick:? Vikings 23, Cardinals 14.

Redskins at Giants

MDS?s take: The Redskins beat the Giants twice last year, and they have an enormous opportunity on Sunday to show they can really hang with the big boys.? But while Robert Griffin III has been a sensational rookie quarterback, the Redskins are still a ways off from being a complete and elite team.

MDS?s pick: Giants 31, Redskins 14.

Florio?s take:? If the Redskins hadn?t swept the Giants last year, this is precisely the kind of game that the Giants would have lost.? Instead, one of the best teams in the NFC will continue its climb back toward the postseason.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 31, Redskins 20.

Packers at Rams

MDS?s take: How many people predicted before the season that both of these teams would be 3-3 when they met in Week Seven? Certainly not me. The Rams could make a huge statement that they?re real contenders by winning this one, but the Packers already made their statement last week in Houston, and now it?s time for Green Bay to start separating itself from the NFC pack.

MDS?s pick: Packers 24, Rams 10.

Florio?s take:? It was only a matter of time before the Packers found the gas pedal.? If they can dismantle the Texans in their own building, the Packers can outscore the Rams in theirs.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 31, Rams 17.

Saints at Buccaneers

MDS?s take: There may still be time for the Saints to turn their season around, but I just don?t see it happening. The bottom line for the Saints is that their defense is a mess, and Drew Brees can?t win a game all by himself. The Bucs will win and get to .500.

MDS?s pick: Buccaneers 24, Saints 20.

Florio?s take:? Last year, when the Saints were great and the Bucs were anything but, New Orleans couldn?t win in Tampa.? And so it makes sense for the Saints, who genuinely believe they can turn this thing around, to roll into Raymond James Stadium and rack up plenty of points.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 31, Buccaneers 25.

Jets at Patriots

MDS?s take: Rex Ryan wants the Patriots to know that he thinks the Jets will win, but I don?t think too many people agree with Rex. The AFC East standings say the division is wide open, but the reality is that the Patriots are heavy favorites, and they?ll take a big step toward proving that on Sunday.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 34, Jets 10.

Florio?s take:? The Jets have their swagger back.? But it?s a week-to-week thing.? And this week the swagger takes a break as the Pats once again work to put a game they should have won behind them.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 30, Jets 23.

Jaguars at Raiders

MDS?s take: This looks to me like Sunday?s worst game, a matchup of two teams going nowhere. But the Raiders are closer to getting somewhere than the Jaguars.

MDS?s pick: Raiders 23, Jaguars 13.

Florio?s take:? If no one watches this game, will it actually be played?? Unfortunately, yes.

Florio?s pick:? Raiders 17, Jaguars 9.

Steelers at Bengals

MDS?s take: A.J. Green can make a lot of big plays against that old and slow Steelers defense, but the Steelers will put a lot of points up on the weak Bengals defense, too. There?s a part of me that feels like this is the game when the Bengals establish themselves as up-and-comers in the AFC North, but a bigger part of me thinks the Steelers find a way to hold the Bengals off.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 35, Bengals 34.

Florio?s take:? The Bengals couldn?t beat the Steelers or Ravens last year when the Bengals were good.? This year, the Bengals aren?t as good.? But neither are the Steelers.? Where?s my Magic 8-Ball when I need it?

Florio?s pick:? Steelers 24, Bengals 21.

Lions at Bears

MDS?s take: The Lions saved their season with a come-from-behind overtime win over the Eagles, but back-to-back road wins will be too much for Detroit fans to ask for. The Bears will remain in the NFC North lead and the Lions will remain in the basement.

MDS?s pick: Bears 20, Lions 17.

Florio?s take:? The Lions think they have their edge back.? The reality is the Eagles gave them a gift.? The Bears won?t be quite so charitable.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 30, Lions 17.

MailBait Fills Your (Or Someone Else?s) Inbox with Email [Email]

MailBait Fills Your (Or Someone Else’s) Inbox with Email Whether you're testing your mail filters to make sure nothing gets through, or you've set up a new webapp and need to make your service will stand up under the onslaught of tons and tons of email, Mailbait is a service that's simple to use: type in an email address and click run to instantly fill that mailbox with newsletters, notifications, and other mail.

This post is part of our Evil Week series at Lifehacker, where we look at the dark side of getting things done. Knowing evil means knowing how to beat it, so you can use your sinister powers for good. Want more? Check out our evil week tag page.

MailBait runs quietly in the background on the web as long as you let it, signing up the address you provided for mailing lists and newsletters (most of which will require confirmation before they add you to their subscriber list) over and over, working through thousands of registrations. I let it run for about 15 minutes and it leveled a freshly created email address with well over 50 subscription sign ups, all right in the inbox, with only a handful routed automatically to spam. Keep in mind that your browser data and IP address is passed through and included in the signups (and visible to the recipient), so it's by no means anonymous, unless of course you take measures to hide yourself.

How well MailBait works depends entirely on the strength of your spam filters and your mail provider's anti-spam technology. You'll know your service or inbox is up to the task if it survives the load of email, and you'll know your filters or mail provider is doing well if you stop getting email after running MailBait for a while, even if it's still running. If you don't, though, well, we hope your filters are up to the task (or the person you're pranking doesn't get too angry with you) and that you don't actually confirm any of the subscriptions that MailBait signs you up for.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) ? President Barack Obama sought a steadier showing, while Republican challenger Mitt Romney strove for further political gains in their second of three campaign debates Tuesday night, a nationally televised town hall-style encounter exactly three weeks before Election Day.

Both men rehearsed extensively for the 90-minute encounter, a turnabout for Obama, whose low-energy performance in the first debate nearly two weeks ago sent a shudder through the ranks of his partisans and helped spark a rise in the polls for his rival.

"I had a bad night," the president conceded, days after he and Romney shared a stage for the first time, in Denver. His aides made it known he didn't intend to be as deferential to his challenger this time, and the presidential party decamped for a resort in Williamsburg, Va., for rehearsals that consumed the better part of three days.

Romney rehearsed in Massachusetts and again after arriving on Long Island on debate day, with less to make up for.

"The first debate was huge and we've seen our numbers move all across the country," his wife, Ann, said before joining her husband in New York.

In a campaign filled with controversy, even the evening's ground rules sparked one.

Candy Crowley of CNN, the moderator, said she expected to be following up at times on questions from the audience. A formal memorandum drafted by the two campaigns said her role would be more limited, but she and the evening's sponsor, the Commission on Presidential Debates said they weren't party to it.

The questions were from about 80 undecided voters inside the hall in a deeply Democratic state. But the audience that mattered most watched on television and was counted in the tens of millions. Crucially important: viewers in the nine battlegrounds where the race is likely to be settled.

The topics ranged widely, unlike the first debate, which covered the economy and domestic issues. The final one, next Monday in Florida, will be devoted to foreign policy.

Opinion polls made the race a close one, with Obama leading in some national surveys and Romney in others. Despite the Republican's clear gains in surveys in recent days, the president led in several polls of Wisconsin and Ohio, two key Midwestern battlegrounds where Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are campaigning heavily.

Barring a last-minute shift in the campaign, Obama is on course to win states and the District of Columbia that account for 237 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory. The same is true for Romney in states with 191 electoral votes.

The remaining 110 electoral votes are divided among the hotly contested battleground states of Florida (29), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13) New Hampshire (4), Iowa (6), Colorado (9), Nevada (6), Ohio (18) and Wisconsin (10).

In a possible preview of his debate strategy, Obama has campaigned in the past several days by accusing Romney of running away from some of the conservative positions he took for tax cuts and against abortion earlier in the year when he was trying to win the Republican nomination.

"Maybe you're wondering what to believe about Mitt Romney," says one ad, designed to remind voters of the Republican's strong opposition to abortion except in cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at stake.

Romney countered by stressing both in person and through his television advertising the slow pace of the economic recovery, which has left growth sluggish and unemployment high throughout Obama's term. Joblessness recently declined to 7.8 percent, dropping below 8 percent for the first time since the president took office.

Romney also has stepped up his criticism of the administration's handling of the terrorist attack against the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, more than a month ago that resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

So far, the Republican challenger has not aired any television advertising on the issue, a suggestion that strategists believe it dims in importance next to the economy.

But the attack sparked one of the sharpest exchanges in last week's vice presidential debate, when Ryan cited it in asserting that the administration's foreign policy was unraveling and Vice President Joe Biden accused his rival of uttering "a bunch of malarkey."

Biden also said that "we" had not been aware of a request for additional security at the facility, a statement that the White House later said applied to the president and vice president.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she accepted responsibility for the level of security assigned to the consulate.
