iOnRoad Augmented Driving (for Android)

You may have already heard the buzz about augmented reality, but let's put it in an automotive context. Imagine your phone helping you drive your car?such as putting up safety alerts for vehicles too close to yours, and tracking incoming dangers in real time. That's the idea behind iOnRoad Augmented Reality, an augmented reality driving app for Android. If you do a lot of driving, this free app is a worthy download, as long as you're not expecting luxury-car level accuracy.

Interface, Live View, and Collision Detection
For this review, I tested iOnRoad Augmented Driving 1.1.1.3 on a?Verizon Wireless HTC Rezound. The only thing you need to get started is a windshield mount for your Android phone, since the app needs to "see" what's ahead at all times in order to function. Any generic windshield mount should do; I listed this as a con (above) mainly because it's not something most people have around unless they're already using their phone for in-car navigation.

When you first fire up iOnRoad, it takes about a minute to adjust to its surroundings. The live view is accurate and updates beautifully, just like when using the phone as a viewfinder in the Camera app. It highlights the current lane of travel in green. In my tests, the app also figured out my current speed, much like any current GPS navigation app would. Tap the Menu button, and you'll head over to the main menu, which features eight large icons for cuing up navigation, music, and other tasks in the background. With the live view visible, you can also tap Navigation on the left to start Google Maps Navigation; then both will run simultaneously.

The collision detection works just like the options you'd find on an upscale luxury car. With the phone mounted on the windshield, the app can tell you if it detects a possible collision with another vehicle ahead, even when the app is running in the background. In practice, this worked well, though I should note that there was only so much testing I could do here, as each "test" involved me putting myself in a somewhat dangerous situation to see if the app figured out what was going on. In other words: Don't try this at home (but by all means, try the app).

Headway Distance Monitoring and Photo Snapshots
The headway distance monitoring is similar, but instead of looking for possible accidents, the app simply measures how far away the nearest car is in front of you, and shows you with a graphical readout. It also sounds an alert if that car is too close for safe braking in the event of a sudden stop, based on your own speed of travel. In testing, this feature also worked well. Once iOnRoad became acquainted with my surroundings, it figured out there was a Hummer stretch limo ahead of me. The app locked onto it and then put up a real-time readout showing how many feet away I was. When I got too close to the Hummer's rear bumper, the app popped up a warning and sounded an alarm based on my current speed, the Hummer's speed, and the distance between us.

On the other hand, I had less success with the lane departure warning. I tested it by popping on my blinker and then beginning to drift out of the lane I was in; the blinker was to notify other motorists, as once again I didn't want to cause an accident. I did eventually get the app to sound the lane departure warning, but several attempted drifts left the app completely silent.

Another useful feature: You can take snapshots using the main interface with a single button tap. This way you can photograph an interesting landmark, car, or other feature you may want to save for later, without having to fumble with starting up the phone's camera app. iOnRoad also includes something of a game called Safety Point Counter, which lets you rack up points based on how long you can drive with the fewest amount of safety alerts. The app immediately begins adding points to your score as it's running, with a readout in the top center of the display. This seems fairly pointless, but hey, you can just ignore it.

Car Locator, Other Features, and Conclusions
iOnRoad offers numerous other features, though none are as game-changing as the collision detection and other real-time warnings. The Car Locator does what other apps already do, but with a twist: It records your parked car's GPS location and also takes a photo snapshot. It then places a marker on a map, so when you return to find your car, you can view your location versus the marker on the map, as well as pop up a photo of where you parked the car.

Back at home, you can log into your personal Web dashboard, which saves and tracks the various alerts from your last trip. It also saves snapshots from the road and lets you share driving data with others. The SMS and notification narrator does exactly what it sounds like: It reads incoming texts and notification alerts out loud to you. The app also has an automatic driving detector, which figures out if you've somehow stepped into your car and started driving. If so, it activates itself. I didn't have a bicycle handy to test this feature and try and throw it off, but it's a nice touch.

Overall, iOnRoad offers a bevy of interesting features you won't find in typical GPS navigation apps. I don't want to damn it with faint praise by calling it a fun distraction, because it actually enhances driving safety. Over time, I'll be keeping an eye on this app to see how it evolves; for now, it's worth installing, as long as you're not expecting it to be as effective as the crash avoidance systems found on $60,000 luxury cars. Considering it's free and fun to use, and this is its first non-beta iteration, we can cut it some slack.

Video Making for Fun and For (Non)Profits

Video?may not be the most widely used marketing channel, but it is definitely one of the?fastest?growing. Video, when done right, can grab your audience?s attention and make a lasting impression. Sean King, who is also participating in our Nonprofit Marketing Guide Mentoring Program, shares some takeaways from his organization?s recent video campaign. ~Kivi

When the Executive Director of our organization put forth a challenge to create a campaign that would appeal to students 16-22, as well as a fan/donor base of 35-64 year olds, we were ready for the challenge.? The result was a campaign that gained a good deal of positive feedback, created buzz along with 100,000 YouTube views (and growing), didn?t break the bank and assisted the organization to meet and exceed its business objectives in the fourth quarter.

A little back story:

Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!) is a non-profit musical youth organization that teaches life lessons through music.? From operating a world champion drum corps to programming for underserved youth, YEA! has challenges from recruiting students for its programs to fundraising from an earned income model that survives exclusively on membership fees, ticket and merchandise sales, sponsorship and personal giving.

The Cadets drum and bugle corps, the flagship program of YEA!, was founded in 1934 and has recorded 20 national and world championships, including their latest in 2011.? They were in need of a campaign that would recruit students, compliment holiday fundraisers, assist in holiday merchandise sales and set the stage for the annual campaign coming in the second quarter of 2012.

We created a video campaign to assist in achieving their objectives called ?Always a Cadet.?

Here are 10 tips we suggest from our video project:

1)????? Take a look at augmenting your program by adding video to your marketing team. Technology has decreased in price and increased in accessibility to the point where to tell a story accurately, intimately and imaginatively, an investment in video production pays dividends.

2)????? Do some research to find a full-time videographer, or if budget is scarce, a freelance independent contractor, intern or student could be the ideal answer.?Finding just the right individual was made easier as we brought Alex Giddings on to our team. Alex was a recent photo-journalism graduate with video skills and was knowledgeable of our activity. With his unique view of the project (and the world), we invested in a hi-def camera and a Macintosh video editing suite and away we went.

3)????? YouTube is a weird and wonderful thing. YouTube provides access to all from both the publisher?s and viewer?s point of view without a great deal of cost or angst.? Just watch what your videos are associated with!

4)????? Find inspiration in the media around you.? As for our project, we decided on a mash-up of the iconic ESPN ?This is Sportscenter? commercials and the ongoing NCAA campaign of ?We?re all going pro someday.?

5)????? Use the icon of your brand, no matter how large or small, to help tell your story. The plan was to use our flagship brand, identified by our fans and target audience in their trademark West Point-inspired uniforms, and place members in uniform in real life situations.? ?Always a Cadet? was born.

6)????? Watch the budget and ask for favors. We had a few ideas on a simple whiteboard, two members who were willing to volunteer some of their time in exchange for a lunch or two, some toll and gas money, and a few forgiving mall security guards and shop owners, we went to work.? Note: if ever shooting in Grand Central Station, the NYPD may not have a deep appreciation for your efforts.

7)????? Keep it short, simple, sweet. ?Most studies tell you that you start losing interest from viewers after the one minute mark, and by three minutes your viewership has flat-lined.? We have a note on our whiteboard that says ?60 Second of Awesome.? Each of our ?Always a Cadet? episodes clocked in at :20 seconds, with bumpers.

8)????? Be consistent in your scheduling and messaging. If using a multiple episode campaign, let people know when to expect each episode and give them something to look forward to. From late October through Christmas eve, every weekday afternoon at 2PM we provided a treat to our fans on Facebook that entertained and engaged our supporters.

9)????? You don?t always have to make an ask. No matter how much people try to connect the dots between marketing and results, it is a very difficult task.? Technology has made it easier, but most marketers will agree that if you have agreement on the business objectives, the right combination of audience, media and message will deliver results. We did not incorporate an outright ?ask? or push for a sale or promotion embedded in the content, but rather an open ended opportunity for us to continue to build the overall brand and message.

10)? Think long term and beyond the immediate. Create your campaign with an end result in mind.? While our original intent was to achieve our fourth quarter objectives, long term we were trying to position the brand and get the seeds planted for our annual campaign which kicks-off in the late first quarter.

In the end here were a few of our takeaways:

To our donors and our alumni the takeaway was mission based: The lessons you learn from our organization will remain with you for the rest of your life, and even when you are no longer wearing the uniform, your experience will be with you wherever you go.

To anyone considering participating in our program, we were showing we could make fun of ourselves, creating a point of differentiation with the other groups we compete with for talent and positioned ourselves as trendsetters in our space; in the end, this is a program you want to be part of.

In summary our team learned a great deal, had some fun and hopefully created a few laughs for folks.? As non-profit marketers, we proved the hypothesis that with a little creativity, a few folks willing to take chances, talent from someone with a good eye and video skills, you can make a relatively small commitment that will pay large dividends on a variety of levels ? but you do need to take that first step.

Is There a Doctor in the House? | Empty Nest Parenting: Grown and ...

Of all the topics I could go on about to a psychiatrist, real estate has never been on my top ten list of neurosis. However, now that I stand at the brink of a major domicile decision, I want to cry out ?Is there a doctor in the house? I need to talk about my home!?

The precipice in question is the decision of what to do with our house, the one we bought three months before we had our first child, the one my husband built a picket fence around to keep children in and evil out, the one in which we have grieved and celebrated, together, for more than two decades. Previously overflowing with family energy, it will soon become very quiet once our youngest leaves for college; that day will arrive sooner than I could have possibly imagined when we moved in.

I might babble to the dear doctor about my happy childhood and tell of the sweet nostalgia that fills me up whenever I visit my out -of -state mother, two or three times a year. Witnessing her joy when she has her complete family in residence defines maternal love to me.

But I wonder, is it our duty to our kids to keep our house exactly as it is for them to return home to, and, someday, to bring their future spouses and children? Just like our parents did?

My widowed mother loves her home of forty-five years, especially when it is filled with her children and grandchildren. But as our time together ends, I wave goodbye to an eighty-five year old woman whose house fits her a bit like an overcoat a size too big. My heart breaks and a have a knot in my throat as we drive away. Back home, I fret about her wellbeing but understand that she has no plans to live anywhere else unless and until her health forces that decision.

My mother-in-law felt the same way throughout her ninety-one years, the last ten of which she also spent alone.

I have loved making our house-into-a?home, along with my husband, and I will be the first one to reach for the Kleenex on the day we move out. What I want, though, is to have a chance to create a second family home, also with my husband, while we are still ?young? (don?t laugh, kids) enough to manage the transition.

So as I wind down my chat with my imaginary therapist, I know I am dealing with guilt, and I appreciate this session.

?Doc, but if we promise to create space for our progeny and to, somehow, embrace all future additions to the family, do you think they will forgive us for wanting to move to a house that works best for a two rather than a four? If not, are you taking new patients??

Scientists clone 'survivor' elm trees

Scientists at the University of Guelph have found a way to successfully clone American elm trees that have survived repeated epidemics of their biggest killer ? Dutch elm disease.

The breakthrough, published today in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, is the first known use of in vitro culture technology to clone buds of mature American elm trees.

"This research has the potential to bring back the beloved American elm population to North America," said Prof. Praveen Saxena, a plant scientist who worked on the project with Professor Alan Sullivan. Both are from Guelph's Department of Plant Agriculture.

"It may also serve as a model to help propagate and preserve thousands of other endangered plant species at risk of extinction across the globe."

Majestic American elms were among the most popular and recognizable trees in Ontario, lining boulevards and adorning city centres. But more than 95 per cent of the population in Eastern Canada and the United States has now been wiped out by Dutch elm disease.

The imported fungal infection interferes with water transport and stops nutrients from circulating in the tree. Only about one in 100,000 elms may be naturally resistant to the pathogen.

Looking for new techniques to clone and produce resistant trees through micropropagation, the Guelph researchers selected tissue samples from survivors in Ontario, including a century-old elm tree growing on the U of G campus.

"The trees that have survived initial and subsequent epidemics potentially represent an invaluable source of potential disease resistance for future plantings and breeding programs," Saxena said.

After growing genetic copies from the shoot tips and dormant buds, the researchers hope to select germplasm with the desired traits including disease-resistance which will further aid elm breeding and biotechnology programs around the world.

They also perfected a way to conserve germplasm over the long term. A germplasm repository now contains 17 accessions collected from mature elm trees that survived across Ontario.

"Our results demonstrate the usefulness of in vitro technologies for conserving and reintroducing endangered germplasm of economic, social and environment significance," Saxena said.

In vitro conservation technology is highly efficient and better than seed banks for conservation of many plant species, he added. Hundreds of genotypes with known phenotypes can be conserved in a safe small space and can easily be propagated.

The professors worked with Guelph postdoctoral researchers Mukund Shukla and Maxwell Jones; Chunzhao Liu, Professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing; and Susan Gosling of the Gosling Foundation.

"We want to conserve and propagate the American elm and many other rare and endangered Canadian native species so that we can start to replace what has been decimated along the way," said Gosling.

Saxena said the team hopes to reintroduce disease-resistant trees. "The need to conserve endangered plant species in provinces such as Ontario where urban sprawl continues is crucial and urgent."

According to my good friend Wiki, infographics are short for information graphics. In other words, they are visual representations of data and/or knowledge.

In my opinion, they are a great way to represent a large (and possibly boring) set of data.

However, this set of data is anything but boring. In fact, it is quite eye-opening.

Ah, that?s downright scary. Children should be engaging in active play. I am all for modern technology, but it may be having more of a negative impact on todays youth.

?Children with obesity, ages 10-13, are reported to have a 70% likelihood of obesity persisting into adult years.?

Unfortunately, many of these U.S. statistics are not surprising. We have fast food restaurants on every corner. Children have televisions, game systems, iPods, and everything in between. Many adults sit at desks/computers for the majority of the workday.

This is exactly why I want to help create and implement health and wellness programs for adults in sedentary jobs.

I believe that we need to start with the parents. The goal is to help parents create healthy habits. Then they will bring those newly acquired healthy habits home to their children. The children will notice the positive effects of a healthy lifestyle and thus they will begin to adopt healthy habits themselves.?

I have seen this in action in my own life. When I overhauled my lifestyle and slowly began to incorporate healthier foods and more activity, my son noticed. He began to show an interest in his own health. I became a vegetarian. Shortly thereafter, he did as well. I started walking/running. He started to join me. He even reads food labels to make certain he?s not eating chemicals and he rarely forgets to take his morning vitamin.

I?m not saying that vegetarianism and vitamins are the key to being healthy. But the fact that he started making changes after I did is a testament to the fact that children are aware. If you make healthy changes, they will not go unnoticed.

In my opinion, setting a good example of a healthy lifestyle is the best way for children to adopt and appreciate health themselves.

It?s the practice what you preach philosophy.

An onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings. Developed by Boston Dynamics, an engineering firm based in Waltham, Mass., with funding from?the Army's Rapid Equipping Force, the Sand Flea weighs 11 pounds and looks like a stripped-down RC car.?Before jumping, the Sand Flea stops, rears back, and then fires a piston that launches it into the air.

The piston is powered by a CO₂ ?charge. The Sand Flea can jump 25 times before the charge needs to be replaced.

MLB schedules vote on Dodgers' finalists

NEW YORK (AP) ? A group that includes former Lakers star Magic Johnson and longtime baseball executive Stan Kasten agreed Tuesday night to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers from Frank McCourt for a record $2 billion.

The price would shatter the mark for a North American sports franchise, topping the $1.1 billion Stephen Ross paid for the NFL's Miami Dolphins in 2009.

Mark Walter, chief executive officer of the financial services firm Guggenheim Partners, would become the controlling owner.

The deal, revealed about five hours after Major League Baseball owners approved three finalists for an intended auction, is one of several steps toward a sale of the team by the end of April. It is subject to approval in federal bankruptcy court.

As part of the agreement, the Dodgers said McCourt and "certain affiliates of the purchasers" would acquire the land surrounding Dodger Stadium, including its parking lots, for $150 million.

The acquiring group, called Guggenheim Baseball Management, has several other investors, among them Mandalay Entertainment chief executive Peter Guber. Kasten is the former president of the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

"I am thrilled to be part of the historic Dodger franchise and intend to build on the fantastic foundation laid by Frank McCourt as we drive the Dodgers back to the front page of the sports section in our wonderful community of Los Angeles," Johnson said in a statement.

The 52-year-old Johnson played 13 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers, winning five NBA championships and three MVP awards.

He retired from the NBA in 1991 after being diagnosed with the HIV, the virus that causes AIDs. He briefly came out of retirement in 1995-96 and did a short stint coaching the Lakers. Since leaving basketball behind he has been hugely successful in business, investing in movie theaters, a production company and restaurants.

He has also been activist in the fight against HIV.

McCourt paid $430 million in 2004 to buy the team, Dodger Stadium and 250 acres of land that include the parking lots, from the Fox division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., a sale that left the team with about $50 million in cash at the time. The team's debt stood at $579 million as of January, according to a court filing, so McCourt stands to make hundreds of millions of dollars even after a $131 million divorce payment to former wife Jamie, taxes and legal and banking fees.

Kasten is expected to wind up as the team's top day-to-day executive.

The other two finalists were:

? Stan Kroenke, whose family properties own the NFL's St. Louis Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids, and who is majority shareholder of Arsenal in the English Premier League.

? Steven Cohen, founder of the hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors and a new limited partner of the New York Mets; biotechnology entrepreneur Patrick Soon-Shiong; and agent Arn Tellem of Wasserman Media Group.

It remains to be seen whether Major League Baseball will challenge the deal in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, where the case is before Judge Kevin Gross.

Under an agreement reached by MLB and McCourt in November, a private auction was to be held among the finalists and McCourt was to select the winner by Sunday. The sales agreement is to be submitted to the bankruptcy court by April 6, ahead of a hearing seven days later, and the sale completed by April 30, the day McCourt is to make the divorce settlement payment.

"This agreement with Guggenheim reflects both the strength and future potential of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and assures that the Dodgers will have new ownership with deep local roots, which bodes well for the Dodgers, its fans and the Los Angeles community," McCourt said in a statement.

The acquiring group would gain the ability to sell the Dodgers' local broadcasting rights starting with games in 2014. The Guggenheim group likely would use money gained from the sale ? or form the team's own network with outside investment ? and use those funds to pay down the acquisition debt.

"The amount of leverage is a big question," said Marc Ganis, president of the Chicago-based consulting firm Sportscorp, which is not involved.
